Your iPhone 13 is a reasonable place to start. Use the main camera, stable support and a dark sky before deciding that an older phone is the reason your photographs disappoint.

Begin with the rear main camera even if the ultrawide composition is tempting. Make a comparison only after you have a sharp reference frame.
The 13 family uses Lightning rather than the USB-C connection of the 15 and 16. Pack the cable for this phone. Do a short rehearsal with the same support and charging arrangement. A stiff cable can pull a small phone out of alignment; a power source placed on an unstable tripod can add vibration. Keep everything dry and secure.
Get more from the file you already captured
Keep the original and edit a copy. Correct a distracting color cast, then inspect faint stars after noise reduction. Resist sharpening until every point looks hard and bright. Check the edges as well as the center before deciding how much to crop.
