Make one sharp, repeatable constellation picture before trying long sequences. A stable phone, a dark composition and a careful review of the saved file are the foundation.

1. Choose a subject and a usable sky

Pick a bright constellation you can recognize and a small stationary foreground. Check that the target is above your actual horizon and away from the strongest glow. A legal, accessible location you know is a better first experiment than a remote place you have never visited after dark.

Use a dark-sky map as a planning aid, then check nearby lamps, weather and Moon conditions. A dark map location does not guarantee a clear or accessible view. The National Park Service provides useful background on protecting and enjoying dark skies.

2. Prepare the phone before mounting it

Clean the camera glass, check battery and storage, and open the mode you intend to use. Start at the rear 1x camera. Remove a source of reflections, such as dirty lens glass, before blaming the sensor.

Set up a tripod and secure clamp or another genuinely stable support. Check that the phone will not slide when tilted. Keep cables slack and avoid a surface that moves when you walk away.

3. Take the first Night mode frame

Use Photo mode and allow the camera to recognize the dark scene. Select an available Night mode capture and use a timer. Keep the phone stationary until capture finishes. Apple's Night mode guide explains the relevant control; its position can change with iOS.

Do not demand a particular countdown. The phone chooses its available range based on the scene and stability. If it does not offer a longer capture, improve support and reframe away from bright lights before searching for unrelated settings.

4. Inspect before taking twenty more

Enlarge stars near the center, then the edges. Check a distant foreground too. Compare the following symptoms with a single controlled change.

If focus needs help, use the supported focus controls and confirm with another saved image. Do not assume the stock camera has a manual infinity dial. A third-party manual app has its own behavior and requires a separate test.

5. Compare two exposures without changing the scene

Take a shorter version and another at the longest currently available capture. Keep the same framing. Choose the result with the most useful star detail rather than the brightest preview.

Write down the phone model, mode, approximate conditions and what changed. That simple record helps you repeat a success and prevents you from attributing every improvement to a new accessory.

6. Edit a copy

Correct a strong color cast and adjust brightness modestly. Compare faint stars before and after noise reduction. Avoid sharpening until the stars look unnaturally hard or removing the entire sky background with a black-point adjustment.

If your Pro model offers ProRAW, try a paired comparison after the ordinary photo works. Larger files can provide editing flexibility, but they are not a substitute for clean capture. Preserve the original when transferring files so you can judge the actual camera result.
