If the Moon is a featureless white blob, reduce its exposure before adding zoom. The Moon is a bright sunlit subject surrounded by a dark scene, which often misleads automatic exposure.

A pleasing Moon-above-the-city image and a close-up of craters are different projects. Your phone can frame the first on its own. The second depends much more on optical reach, stable alignment and the conditions through which you are shooting.

Choose the picture before the settings

Fix exposure first

Put the phone on a stable support and frame the Moon. Tap the lunar area and lower the exposure control until the disk is no longer clipped to white. Take several versions, because the preview alone can be misleading.

If Night mode activates for the dark surrounding sky, compare a shot with it shortened or disabled. A mode intended to brighten a dark scene is not automatically the right choice for a bright lunar disk. Use the timer and review the saved image closely before taking more.

Use real optical reach carefully

Start with the lens options your model actually has. The standard, Pro and Pro Max in a generation do not always have the same camera arrangement. Make a comparison at the native lens choices before dragging digital zoom to its maximum.

If a heavily enlarged image looks like watercolor, return to a smaller lunar disk within an attractive scene. A slight crop of a cleaner original often makes a better final photograph than an extreme enlargement.

The Moon's appearance also changes with its phase. Shadows near the boundary between lunar day and night can make relief easier to read than a flatly illuminated full Moon. NASA's Moon phases guide is useful for planning what will be illuminated.

A short capture sequence

Take one darker, one middle and one brighter frame without changing the composition. Compare the boundary of the Moon and any visible surface pattern. Keep the brightest version that still retains the lunar detail you wanted.

If the scene includes a skyline, decide whether it can remain a silhouette. Trying to lift the street until it looks like daylight may sacrifice the Moon. If you combine exposures later, describe the picture as a composite when its appearance would otherwise be misleading.

At low altitude, turbulent air can make the lunar edge wobble. Compare again when the Moon is higher and avoid viewing over a hot roof. More sharpening does not reverse unstable air.

When an adapter is worth buying

Buy an eyepiece adapter when you already have suitable optics and want a repeatable connection. It must fit the eyepiece's outside diameter and place the selected phone camera at the right distance. A label saying 1.25-inch is not enough to prove that fit.
