A star-trail picture combines the changing positions of stars while the camera remains fixed. The difficult part is keeping a clean, consistent sequence, not finding the longest possible single exposure.

Apple's Camera Time-lapse creates a moving clip. A trail photograph instead retains many successive positions in one image. You can use a dedicated trail capture app or take a sequence of stills and combine them in software that supports a lighten or maximum-value blend.

Plan the shape before starting

Stars appear to turn around the celestial poles. Pointing toward a pole creates arcs around a common center; a different direction produces a different pattern through the frame. Use a sky chart to identify your direction rather than assuming every circular trail photograph faces north.

For rough planning, Earth turns about 15 degrees per hour relative to the stars. A 20-minute session covers about five degrees of rotation; an hour covers about fifteen. These are calculated angular rotations, not a promise of trail length in pixels. The apparent arc also depends on where a star lies relative to the pole and how wide your camera sees.

Keep a building, tree trunk or ridge in the frame to make that motion legible. Avoid leaves, flags and foreground subjects likely to move.

App behavior and purchases change. Test your installed version before committing an evening or paying for features. A promise of a long simulated exposure does not necessarily mean the sensor made one uninterrupted exposure.

A direct route with NightCap

In NightCap Camera, select Photo, open the star-shaped camera-options control and choose Star Trails. With the phone fixed in position, tap the shutter to start and again to finish and save. The developer's tutorial suggests at least 15 minutes for visible trails. Use a shorter run first to test your setup. This mode builds a trail result; do not assume it also supplies every original frame for separate stacking.

Run a short trial

First make a sharp iPhone star photograph. Then secure the same composition and run a five-minute sequence. Keep focus, framing and color treatment consistent where your capture app allows it. Turn off features that interrupt the chosen workflow and check whether the phone stops capturing when the screen sleeps.

Inspect the sequence frame by frame. If the stars jump, the support moved. If brightness varies, passing clouds or automatic exposure changes may be responsible. If all stars have repeated gaps in the combined image, examine the interval between captures.

This small trial is also a battery and storage check. A charger cable pulling on the clamp can spoil the session it was meant to extend. Secure any cable with slack and keep the phone and power equipment dry.

Combine the frames without losing the foreground

In a lighten blend, brighter pixels from successive images accumulate. This can retain the star paths, but it can also retain every headlamp sweep and passing car light. Remove obviously spoiled frames, then check whether their absence creates a distracting gap.

Keep one clean foreground image available. If you blend a separate foreground, describe the result as a composite when sharing it. Do not present a heavily assembled image as a single unedited exposure.

For a numerical example, 120 frames captured at a 15-second start-to-start interval span roughly 30 minutes. If the actual exposure occupies only part of each interval, the unrecorded time can appear as breaks. Measure the real app behavior rather than calculating from the shutter label alone.

Stack an existing still sequence in StarStaX

If your capture app saves separate stills, transfer them without resizing, export consistent JPEG or TIFF copies if necessary, and open them using Open Images in StarStaX. Select Lighten in its blending preferences, run Start Processing, inspect the result at full size and save the output. Add dark frames only when you actually captured appropriate ones.

The StarStaX developer tutorial demonstrates the import, processing and saving controls, including optional Gap Filling. Keep a plain Lighten version first. Gap Filling creates an interpretation between recorded segments; it is not evidence that the camera observed those missing moments. Do not use NightCap Meteor mode as an all-frame trail recorder: it selectively retains candidate frames.

Troubleshooting the finished trails

Short dashed trails suggest capture gaps. Double trails suggest movement. A growing gray veil suggests cloud, dew or sky brightness. A sharp landscape with a smeared sky may be intentional here, but blurred trees are still a stability or wind problem.

For city sessions, use the light-pollution guide. For a brief streak that appears in only one frame, compare it with the meteor, satellite and aircraft chart.

Can I make trails with a single Night mode photo?

A short Night mode capture is a poor starting point for long arcs. A consistent sequence gives you more control over the total recorded movement.

Do I need a telescope?

No. A wide view is useful because it shows both the pattern and a foreground. A secure phone support is the more relevant accessory.

Where can I check the sky direction?

Use a planetarium such as Stellarium to preview the sky at your location and time. Verify the orientation against actual stars before starting.
