Use Photo mode for a finished star picture and Time-lapse for visible movement across the sky. A time-lapse is not automatically a star-trail photograph, and the Pro Max's zoom is not the starting point for either.
The useful first project for an iPhone 15 is a wide constellation scene with a recognizable foreground. Make that still image work before leaving the phone outside for a long sequence. A small focus or framing mistake becomes much more frustrating when repeated for an hour.
Standard, Plus, Pro or Pro Max?
All four models support Night mode. The iPhone 15 and Plus save their regular photos without Apple ProRAW; the Pro and Pro Max provide that additional editing option. Start at the rear 1x view regardless of model.
The standard iPhone 15 specifications list a 48MP main camera, but a daytime resolution figure does not tell you how detailed a processed night-sky image will be. Evaluate the stars in the saved result instead of choosing settings by the largest number.
Unlike the Lightning connector on the iPhone 13 family, the iPhone 15 uses USB-C. Check the cable you pack for a long sequence rather than assuming an older phone kit is ready. Its main camera also differs from the 13's 12MP main camera, but neither a port change nor a daylight resolution increase is a substitute for testing the actual Night mode output.
Set up a still photograph first
Choose a dark part of the sky with a clear horizon. A tree silhouette can provide scale, but branches moving in the wind can smear while the sky is being captured. Try a stationary roofline or distant ridge for your first comparison.
Place the phone on a secure support, select Photo and 1x, and wait for Night mode. Use a timer and the longest capture the app offers, then take a shorter version without changing the composition. Review both at the same enlargement. Prefer the frame that keeps more stars distinct, even if its preview looks darker.
If focus hunts, give it a distant bright subject to work with and check the saved stars again. The stock app does not expose the same manual shutter, ISO and focus controls as a dedicated manual camera app. Do not spend the evening searching its menus for a DSLR-style infinity dial.

Apple's Night mode instructions describe Time-lapse as its own Camera mode. Stabilize the phone before beginning and check that recording actually starts. Leave room in your composition for the sky to move.
A useful trial is ten minutes from a safe, sheltered position. Review that clip before attempting a much longer session. Check battery, storage, dew on the lens and whether a foreground light switches on during the evening. This trial duration is a planning suggestion, not a promise of a particular output length; the app chooses its sampling behavior.
Editing a sky without inventing detail
Make a copy before editing. Lower excessive highlights, adjust the color cast gently and inspect the faintest real stars after noise reduction. A black background is not automatically a better photograph if the adjustment deletes half the constellation.
ProRAW can give Pro owners more room to edit, but it also makes storage planning more important. Try it on a short still session first. It does not remove the need for dark skies or turn video into RAW still photography.
Spend on the problem you actually have
