Short answer: most Seestar owners only need three things: the TH10 head ($99) if they want EQ mode and longer exposures, a USB-C power bank for full nights, and sometimes a taller tripod. A dew heater and solar filter are already built in or in the box, and there is no microSD slot to fill.

This guide covers the S30 Pro and S50 Pro and the original S30 and S50 that many people still own. Facts come from ZWO’s product pages and user manuals; prices are ZWO’s US store and High Point on October 11, 2026. We have not tested these accessories ourselves.

1. TH10 head for EQ mode ($99)

On its own tripod a Seestar works in alt-azimuth mode, which keeps every exposure short because the field rotates as the sky turns. The TH10 is a small fluid head that tilts the telescope toward the celestial pole so it can track in EQ mode and take longer exposures, up to 60 seconds on the S50 Pro. It weighs 411 g, carries 5 kg and fits all four models; ZWO’s S30 Pro FAQ says EQ mode cannot be enabled on that model without it.

The S50 Pro needs ZWO’s $9.90 TH10 quick-release plate, since High Point notes the standard plate is not designed for it. ZWO also sells the TH10 with its TC20 carbon tripod for $189, and offers an S30 Pro bundle with both on Amazon.

2. A USB-C power bank

ZWO rates the S30 Pro at about six hours and the S50 Pro at up to nine, but the S50 Pro figure was measured above 25°C with the dew heater off. Cold nights and the heater cut that down; ScopeTrader measured the heater costing about an hour on the 22 Wh models. Every Seestar can run while charging through its USB-C port, so a power bank lets you image all night.

What to look for:

  • A USB-C port rated to deliver 5V/3A (15 W) continuously, which matches every Seestar’s input.
  • About 20,000 mAh for a full winter night on top of the internal battery. ScopeTrader’s field tests found a 5V/3A bank added many hours to a 22 Wh Seestar.
  • Mount the bank on the tripod, not the telescope, and leave slack in the cable so the telescope can turn, as ZWO’s manual advises.

3. A taller tripod

The tabletop tripods on the S30 and S30 Pro are short, and AstroBackyard and BBC Sky at Night both suggest a taller camera tripod if fences or roofs block the low sky. ZWO’s manuals say any photo tripod with a 3/8-inch stud works. Pick one rated for at least twice the weight on top (about 1.65 kg for the S30 Pro, 3.2 kg for the S50 Pro with a TH10), with legs that spread wide; for EQ mode, point one leg north. ZWO’s own TC20 carbon tripod is $99.

4. Dew control

All four Seestars have a built-in dew heater, and ZWO sells no external dew strap or shield for them. Skip the extra strap unless you observe in very damp conditions, and if you add a shield, make sure it clears the arm when the telescope folds. The heater is the main reason to carry a power bank.

5. Filters

Every Seestar has a built-in dual-band filter for emission nebulae and a UV/IR-cut filter. ZWO’s S30 Pro FAQ says external filters are not supported, though third-party maker Apertura sells clip-on filter holders and a $79.95 S30 Performance Upgrade Kit with a dust cover and a Moon and skyglow filter. Note that Apertura’s S50 parts do not fit the S50 Pro. For most owners the built-in filters are enough.

6. Covers and cases

Every Seestar ships with a case or bag. A dust cover for the lens is a cheap extra: Apertura’s covers were $14.95 for the S50 and $19.95 for the S30 and S30 Pro at High Point on October 11, 2026.

Storage and remote access

There is no microSD slot. Export images from the app to your phone, plug the Seestar into a computer over USB-C, where it appears as a drive with a MyWorks folder, or share files over your home network in Station Mode. ZWO’s Telescope Network remote access for the S50 Pro and S30 Pro was a free trial during its beta on October 11, 2026; ZWO has not announced later pricing.

What to skip

  • Dew heaters: already built in.
  • Memory cards: not supported.
  • Eyepieces or Barlow lenses: a Seestar has no eyepiece port.
  • Extra light-pollution filters: the dual-band filter is built in, and ZWO does not support external filters on the S30 Pro.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the TH10 for EQ mode?

For the S30 Pro, ZWO’s FAQ says EQ mode cannot be enabled without the TH10. The other Seestars need the TH10 or a wedge, plus polar alignment in the app. Third-party wedges are not tested by ZWO.

Can I run a Seestar from a power bank?

Yes. Every Seestar takes power through USB-C at 5V/3A and can run while charging, according to ZWO’s manuals. A bank with a USB-C port rated for 5V/3A works; mount it on the tripod and leave cable slack so the telescope can turn.

Can I use my own camera tripod?

Yes. ZWO’s manuals say any photo tripod with a 3/8-inch stud works. Choose one rated for well over the telescope’s weight, with legs that spread wide.

Does the Seestar have a dew heater?

Yes. All four Seestar models have a built-in heater. It shortens battery life, so plan for external power on damp nights.

Does the Seestar take a microSD card?

No. Images are stored internally: 64 GB on the S50 and S30, 128 GB on the Pro models. You export them through the app, over USB-C to a computer, or over your home network in Station Mode.
