Run the same five-minute task in each
Set your location and current time. Find a bright object you can actually identify outside. Advance the chart to your intended observing hour and note its direction and altitude. Then return to the current time so you do not accidentally observe with a future sky still displayed.
Search for one object you want to see and read enough information to understand its brightness and apparent size. Finally, dim the screen and see whether you can use the controls comfortably without repeatedly losing the chart.
This small trial reveals more about everyday fit than comparing the largest database count. A beginner's telescope cannot reveal every object an advanced catalog contains.
Planning and logging
If you routinely make target lists, compare how each edition saves them, filters by visibility and records observations. Check whether synchronization or a particular online service requires an additional tier or subscription. Do not assume all features visible in a Pro demonstration come with Basic.
Make one short list for an actual evening and try to retrieve it outdoors. Test any needed offline behavior before traveling away from reception. Keep an independent copy of important observing notes where the software supports export.
Telescope control is a system decision
