Match voltage, polarity, connector and current capacity before comparing battery size. Then estimate runtime from the whole setup's power use, including heaters, rather than the telescope alone.

A mount that restarts during a slew can end an otherwise good session. A large battery number is not enough to prevent that if the output voltage, cable or connector is wrong.

Start with the telescope requirements

Celestron lists eight AA batteries or an external 12V DC, tip-positive supply for the 6SE and 8SE. Its specification table lists 750mA, but do not treat that figure as a measured constant load or size a multi-device supply without accounting for peaks and accessories.

Use the current manual or an explicitly compatible Celestron power accessory to confirm the connector and supply rating for your equipment. A plug fitting into the socket does not establish safe electrical compatibility. Do not use an arbitrary USB-to-barrel cable or guess polarity.

For a named starting option, Celestron lists its AC Adapter – 2 Amp, item 18778, as compatible with NexStar SE. Compare watts and watt-hours

Watts describe the rate of power use. Watt-hours describe energy capacity. For a simple estimate, runtime in hours equals usable watt-hours divided by average watts.

Suppose a battery provides 100Wh of usable energy and your complete setup averages 15W. The arithmetic gives about 6.7 hours. If it averages 25W with heaters, the same energy gives four hours. These are illustrative calculations, not tested runtimes for a named battery or telescope.

If the battery label quotes amp-hours, voltage matters: 10Ah at 12V is nominally 120Wh, whereas 10Ah at 3.7V is nominally 37Wh. Output conversion, temperature, battery condition and reserve reduce what you can plan to use.

A practical choice for home or travel

At home, a manufacturer-compatible supply can avoid battery charging, provided the installation and weather protection are suitable. Follow the supply's indoor or outdoor limitations and keep connections dry. A battery avoids running a long mains cable through the observing area, but it still needs correct output specifications and safe placement.

For travel, choose usable runtime with reserve, not the lightest label that barely meets a calculation. Test the fully assembled system near home through slews and normal accessory use before depending on it at a remote site. Record starting charge, duration, weather and which devices were connected.

Check the cable before blaming the battery

With power off, inspect the connector fit and cable condition. Route slack so the mount can move without pulling the plug, and use the mount's cord-wrap features according to its manual. Check that a battery's output remains enabled under the expected load.

If restarts continue, simplify to the mount and a known compatible supply before adding devices back. Do not modify the mount's wiring to work around an uncertain connector. Use manufacturer support for unresolved electrical faults.
